She started off in Shirley Temple musicals like "Stowaway" (1936) and "Poor Little Rich Girl" (36) and soon moved on as the star herself in big budget musicals such as "On The Avenue" (37) and "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (38). She even appeared occasionally in a drama like "In Old Chicago" (37). She had a great singing voice and other notable films included: "Tin Pan Alley" (40), "That Night In Rio" (41), "Hello, Frisco, Hello" (43) and "The Gang's All Here" (43). She retired from films early on after her last film "Fallen Angel" in 1945 - with sporadic appearances later on.

Faye, Alice (Alice Jeanne Leppert) Born in New York City 5/5/1915; died 5/9/1998 of cancer at the Rancho Mirage, California Eisenhower Medical Center where she had two tumors removed from her stomach the month before. Married and divorced to singer Tony Martin (1936-1939); Phil Harris (1941-1995 his death). Faye began her career as a dancer with the Chester Hale vaudeville troupe at the New York Capitol Theatre at age thirteen, and while working there adopted Frank Faye's name as her stage name. Chorus girl on Broadway in George White's Scandals (1931), and made her screen debut in the 1934 movie version of the play. Radio debut as a vocalist on The Rudy Vallee Show for NBC in 1933, then toured with Vallee's band (named by Vallee's wife in their divorce case). Vocalist on radio programs including Music From Hollywood for CBS (1937); Good News Of 1938 for NBC (1937). Faye and husband (Phil Harris) co-starred on The Fitch Bandwagon for NBC-Radio (1946-1948), re-titled to The Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show on NBC-Radio (1948-1954). Commercial spokeswoman on radio and television for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (1984-?).

Most of these showcased her skills as a first-rate musical star, but she was also occasionally given the chance to impress viewers as a dramatic performer in headier fare. More musicals followed, including the lavish 1943 Technicolor spectacle "Hello, Frisco, Hello," in which she sang her best remembered song, the Academy Award-winning "You'll Never Know," and "The Gang's All Here" (1943) which gave Faye a chance to work with legendary director-choreographer Busby Berkeley.

Knowing that Betty Grable was the Fox studio's new darling and deciding that she had had enough of Hollywood, the actress famously wrote a note to Zanuck, left the key to her dressing room with a security guard and drove off the lot, refusing to fulfill the remainder of her contract. While her acrimonious departure got Faye unofficially blacklisted, the actress still had plenty to keep her busy, looking after her two young daughters (born in 1942 and 1944) and teaming up with husband Phil Harris for a popular radio program that began life in 1946 as "The Fitch Bandwagon." Later rechristened "The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show," the musical comedy show had an eight-year run.
