Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca , more commonly known as Anthony Quinn, was a Mexican-American actor, painter and writer. He starred in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including La Strada, The Guns of Navarone, Zorba the Greek, Guns for San Sebastian, Lawrence of Arabia, The Message and Lion of the Desert. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor twice: for Viva Zapata! in 1952 and Lust for Life in 1956.

I love Anthony Quinn. Awesome is not good enough. Zorba is such a great movie. I thought he was Greek. He gave the character an earthy and soulful feel. When he danced you could feel the rhythm. My kind of man.

Great actor! I was surprised to learn a few years ago while reading his autobiography that he actually got his career start in working with the famed Christian evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson back in the early days of her flamboyant and theatrical ministry in Southern California. She was quite a gal herself back in the day . I believe the book and movie Elmer Gantry were both based in part on the real- life character of Aimee Semple McPherson.

Quinn had been battling throat cancer before he died. Married and divorced to Katherine De Mille (movie pro- ducer Cecil De Mille's adopted daughter) (1937-1863); Iolanda Addolori (1966- 1997); his secretary Kathy Benvin (1997-2001 his death). Quinn was raised in Los Angeles, California and became a naturalized US citizen in the 1940s. Before he began an acting career, he was a boxer, butcher, slaughterhouse worker and a street corner pracher. Earned a scholarship to study architecture with Frank Lloyd Wright. Screen debut in Parole (1936). Last movie was Avenging Angelo (2001). Academy Awards for Viva Zapata (1952); Lust For Life (1956).
