Auerbach graduated from Columbia with a degree in journalism, and began writing for plays in 1932 with "How Revolting" presented by the Columbia University's varsity show in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Adtoria. Served in the enlisted ranks of the U.S. Army during WWII. Writer of comedy material for many celebrities including Al Jolson. Writer for radio programs including The Fred Allen Show on NBC (1936-1941); The Milton Berle Show (Texaco Star Theater) on ABC (1948-1949).

Writer of a book in 1965 that is an account of his days as a comedy writer for radio titled, "Funny Men Don't Laugh." Auerbach won a shared 1955 Emmy Award for Best Comedy Writing for The Phil Silvers Show (You'll Never Get Rich) on CBS.
