As a teenager was a musician aboard cruise ships that visited the West Indies and South America, then moved to New York working in bands of Vaughn Monroe, Glenn Miller, Harry James, Nelson Riddle, Charlie Ventura, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. By the late 1940's, Ross was a freelance musician in California, occasional accompanist for singer Lena Horne. Music conductor-arranger for The Bob Crosby Show on CBS-TV (1953-1957).
