Born in Tacoma, Washington 3/18/1912. Gilmore began his career as a singer and commentator in 1934 at a Tacoma radio station, then was a staff announcer for KWSC-Pullman, Washington (1934); KOL-Seattle (1935); CBS-KNX Hollywood (1936-1941); freelance announcer after that. Served in the US Navy during WWII. Following the end of WWII, Gilmore taught radio announcing at the University of Southern California. In 1946, Gilmore and Glenn Y. Middleton co-authored Television and Radio Announcing. During his career, Gilmore headed both the Los Angeles branch and the national pacts of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), and was the inaugural president of the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters (PPB).
