Unwanted by his parents, he was adopted by the Linkletter family when he was one month old. At age two, his new family moved to San Diego, California where he was raised. Following graduation from high school, he worked at several jobs until 1931 when he enrolled at San Diego State College. While in college, he became a staff announcer at KGB-San Diego (1933). Followng graduation from college, he was radio director for various expositions from Texas to California, and was the radio program manager for the San Francisco World's Fair (1937-1939). Free-lance radio announcer and host (1938-1942). Host of radio programs including Pull Over, Neighbor (1938); People Are Funny on NBC and CBS (1943-1960); What's Doin' Ladies? on NBC (1943-1945); House Party on CBS and ABC (1945-1967).
