Barbara Stanwyck is TCM's Star of the Month for December, and really, who could hope for a better Christmas-Hanukkah-Kwanzaa present than that? David Thomson wrote of Stanwyck in his Biographical Dictionary of Film: "While she was alive, she did not seem to be one of the great stars. But at her death, it was clear how widely she was loved. She was honest, sharp, gutsy, and smart. Terrific." Honest, sharp, gutsy and smart. We don't think Stanwyck can be summed up any better (though Thomson left out sexy, which she certainly was, and in spades).

In “Double Indemnity,” Barbara Stanwyck is in Fred MacMurray’s apartment as Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) is in the elevator to visit Fred. If he sees Barbara there, it’s all over for both killers. Fred blocks Keyes’ view by hiding Stanwyck behind the apartment door facing outward. But no apartment door faces outward for obvious reasons. I’m curious to know how many viewers have caught this flaw.

There are so many things I like about her, as a person, her passion for working, her common touch, her lack of haughtiness, her iron will and ability to plow through every trial that she was faced with. She is a most amazing woman in these and so many other things. She really is the greatest actress in motion picture history. I own all these episodes here as well, and was so surprised to sit back and listen to her, without watching her. She has a depth of emotional delivery no one else can touch. She made her performances real and natural and never really got enough credit - including never winning an acting Oscar. Barbara Stanwyck was born Ruby Catherine Stevens and spent her early years in Brooklyn. But at age four, a drunk pushed her mother off a streetcar, killing her, and two weeks her dad fled to work on the Panama Canal, leaving Stanwyck and her siblings as orphans. Her older sister — but only slightly older — took care of them at first before they headed to a series of foster homes, from which Stanwyck regularly ran away. At some point, she was released back into the custody of her older sister, by then a showgirl, and Ruby toured with her, learning the routines and becoming enamored with the lifestyle. She dropped out of school at age 14, took an assortment of shopgirl jobs, and, in 1923, at the age of 16, landed a semi-permanent gig as a showgirl with Ziegfeld Follies.
