By 1973, he was on WMCA-New York where he quit over a dispute over the station's broadcasting the New York Yankee baseball broadcasts. For the last seven years before his death, Gray was a disc jockey at WOR- New York.

Served in the Depression era Civilian Concertration Corp (The CCC) during the late 1930's. He began his radio career on a West Coast Radio station as the host of supermarket openings. He served in the US Army during WWII. Following the war, Gray became a disc jockey at WKAT-Miami, Florida, then by 1947 was at WOR-New York as host of Barry Gray on Broadway, which in one form or another continued until his death on various stations. Moderator of radio programs including Author Meets The Critics for Mutual (ca late 1940s). On screen playing as himself, a disc jockey in Screen Snapshots: Spin The Platter (1949).
