Spoiler : Fabulous Actor. Casting him as Sherlock Holmes was brilliant.

Spoiler : Basil Rathbone was a veteran himself seving on the Western Front in World War I first with the London Scottish Regiments which ranks also included future actors Claude Rains, Herbert Marshall (who loss a leg) and Ronald Colman. Rathbone later served with the 2nd Battalion of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment as an intelligence office. Following the combat death of his younger brother John in June 1918, Rathbone seems to have sought his own death by acts of reckless bravery in a series of trench raids and even going on recon missions in No Man's Land in broad daylight. Death did not find the young actor but the awardment of the Military Cross for conspicuous daring and gallantry.

Spoiler : Rathbone, Basil (birth name was Philip St. John Basil Rathbone) Born in Johannesburg, South Africa 6/13/1892; died 7/21/1967 of a heart attack in New York City. Married and to divorced actress Marion Foreman (1914-1926); writer Oulda Bergere (1926- 1967 his death). London stage debut in The Taming Of The Shrew (1911). Rathbone served in the British Armed Forces during WWI, receiving a Military Cross.

He is mostly remembered for portraying Sherlock Holmes in fifteen feature movies (1939-1946). Last movie was playing Canuto Perez in Autopsia de un fantasma which was released in 1968. Regular performer on The Circle for NBC-Radio (1939). Sherlock Holemes on the NBC and Mutual Radio Network series (1939-46). Burke on Scotland Yard's Inspector Burke for Mutual-Radio (1947). Host-narrator for Tales of Fatima on CBS-Radio (1949). Host of Your Lucky Clue on CBS-TV (1952). Narrator for The Baffling World Of ESP on ABC-TV (1965).
