Bernie, Ben (birth name was Bernard Anzelevitz, aka Ben Ansel) Born in Bayonne, New Jersey 5/30/1891; died 10/20/1943 of a lung and heart disease in Beverly Hills, California. The "O-O-Old Maestro," was a genial, plush-voiced veteran of stage, screen and radio. In 1922 Bernie formed one of this country's leading dance bands (Oscar Levant was his pianist briefly). The band remained popular until Bernie's untimely death. Screen debut in Shoot The Works (1934). While on radio was known for his catchphrase of, "yowsah, yowsah, yowsah." Became famous for his radio program sign-off of, "Au revoir a fond cheerio, a bit of toodle-oo, God bless you, and pleasant dreeeaaams" (1922-1943). Ben Bernie and His Lads band was featured on The Ben Bernie Show for NBC-BLUE (1930-1931); CBS (1931-1932); NBC (1932-1935); NBC-BLUE (1935-1937); CBS (1938-1940); NBC-BLUE (1940-1941); CBS (1941-1943). Host of Musical Mock Trial on CBS-Radio (1940).
