Spoiler : Born in New York City 5/25/1898; died 8/27/1971 of a heart attack following abdominal surgery in New York City. Married to actress Sylvia Sidney (1935-1936), writer Phyllis Cerf (see Phyllis Cerf Wagner) (?-1971 his death). Graduated from Columbia University, then worked as a stock clerk before he became America's best-known publisher as head of Random House.

Spoiler : This is not entry accurate. Sadly Mr Cerf had abdominal surgery in December of 1970. He passed in August 1971. He did have a another surgery before he passed, however, it doesn’t clearly state if it was related or similar to the first surgery 9 months prior . From the New York Times August 29, 1971 “The cause of death was not immediately determined, but Mr. Cerf had recently been dis charged from Lenox Hill Hos pital following surgery.
