She was the # 1 pinup during World War II and the highest-salaried American woman in 1946 and '47. She was one of the most popular female stars of the classic era and preceded Marilyn Monroe as a top sex symbol and glamour goddess during the forties. She passed the torch to Marilyn in 1953 when they co-starred in the hit "How To Marry A Millionaire". She was married to actor Jackie Coogan from '37 to '39 and bandleader Harry James from '43 to '65. Betty began in films at a young age - only 12 in an uncredited chorus girl part in 1929's "Happy Days". (Her mother stated she was 15). She appeared in 32 films during the 1930s before her "big break" in 1940's "Down Argentine Way" (after Alice Faye turned down the role due to illness). She was a huge hit all of a sudden with audiences and on-going starring roles in big budget Technicolor Fox musicals. She was an excellent singer and dancer as well.
