Born in Oklahoma 9/19/1924; died 8/3/2004 of lung cancer at a hospice in Palm Beach County, Florida. Murphy served in the US Marine Corp during WWII. His major-league broadcasting career began when he joined Curt Gowdy on Radio with the Boston Red Sox in 1954, moving to the Baltimore Orioles in 1960. In 1962, he was hired ny the Mets' announcing team, which also included broadcaster Lindsey Nelson and former Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Ralph Kiner. The crew worked together on radio and TV for some 17 years, until Nelson left for San Francisco.

Murphy
called the New York Mets' baseball games from 1962 until his retirement after the 2003 season. Though he initially called games for radio and television, beginning in 1981 he switched entirely to radio. He called some 6,000 games during his stint with the Mets.

Murphy was inducted into the broadcaster's wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994, receiving the annual Ford C. Frick Award. The radio booth in Shea Stadium was named in his honor in 2002.
