Actress CAROLE LANDIS (1919 – 1948) was born on this day. She worked as a contract-player for Twentieth Century-Fox in the 1940s. Her breakthrough role was as the female lead in the 1940 film One Million B.C., with United Artists. Landis appeared in a string of successful films in the early '40s, usually as the second female lead. In a time when the singing of many actresses was dubbed in, Landis's own voice was considered good enough and was used in her few musical roles. She also had roles playing opposite fellow pin-up girl Betty Grable in Moon Over Miami and I Wake Up Screaming, both in 1941.

Carole Landis (1919 ~ 1948) Landis tragically passed on this day (July 5th) in 1948 - at only 29. She committed suicide (by overdose) the day after having dinner with Rex Harrison on the 4th of July. She hoped he would leave his wife (actress Lilli Palmer) for her, as they were having an affair - but he refused. Carole became a star with 1940's "One Million B.C." and she co-starred with Betty Grable in two films - "Moon Over Miami" (41) and "I Wake Up Screaming" (41). She wrote a book about her adventures entertaining the troops during World War II, which was turned into a movie - "Four Jills in a Jeep" (44) co-starring Kay Francis, Martha Raye and Mitzi Mayfair. Other films included: "Topper Returns" (41), "Dance Hall" (41), "Cadet Girl" (41), "Secret Command" (44), "Having Wonderful Crime" (45) and "A Scandal in Paris" (46).

Married to Irving Wheeler (?-?); Willis Hunt, Jr. (?-?). Nicknamed, "Hollywood's Original Sweater Girl." Landis was a Busby Berkely dancer at age fifteen. Screen debut A Day At The Races (1937). Wrote a book about her wartime experiances entertaining WWII GI's that was made into the 1944 movie (with her co-starring) Four Jills In A Jeep. Guest star on radio programs including the syndicated 1938 series Warner Brothers Academy Theater; The Continental Celebrity Club for CBS (1945- 1946).

I saw her in a movie It Happened In Flatbush. Not bad I think she looked better as a blonde and I think she was trying to be Carole Lombard but still better than what we have today. Sad, she had such a short life with a lot of drama and in the end she took her own life over a man Rex Harrison. Many of the actresses of that Hollywood era were children of European immigrants so they had no money, they did what they had to do to get into Hollywood.
