Her last film made was in 1941 called To Be or Not to Be, and the release was held back due to the start of WWII. Unfortunately, Lombard would not live to see the release of her last film. At the age of 33, Lombard, her mother, and 20 other people died in a plane crash on January 16th, 1942, just outside of Las Vegas.

Carole Lombard (Jane Alice Peters) Born Fort Wayne, Indiana, October 6, 1908 Died Potosi Mountain ("Table Rock"), Nevada, January 16, 1942 Age 33 (plane crash) The January 18, 1942, broadcast of the Jack Benny Program was canceled because Jack drove Carole's husband (Clark Gable) to the crash site. The Bennys and the Gables became very close during the production of the movie To Be or Not To Be (1942). Carole had done a number of Lux and Screen Guild broadcasts.

great comedian and great dramatic actress. One of my favorite movies is In Name Only. She died years before I was born but I have seen most of her movies, but the ones I love to watch are she and Clark camping, fishing, etc. (home movies).....think she would have been a hoot to hangout with.

We’re of the opinion that TCM is underselling her, frankly; she deserves some prime-time love. But we won’t look a gift horse in the mouth, and neither should you. We suggest that you call in sick or, if you must go to work, that you clear some space on your DVR, enough for nearly 12 hours of classic cinematic entertainment.

She was married to William Powell from 1931 until 1933 and to Clark Gable from 1939 until her tragic passing from a plane crash in 1942 (at age 33). ESTHER WILLIAMS (1921 ~ 2013) Williams was unable to compete in the 1940 Summer Olympics (because of the outbreak of World War II), so she joined Billy Rose's Aquacade and teamed up with Johnny Weismuller, swimming together for five months. She caught the attention of MGM scouts and the rest is history - as Esther became the only female swimming star and her movies (and sets) were built around her in swimming musical spectaculars. Her films included: "Andy Hardy's Double Life" (1942), "A Guy Named Joe" (43), "Bathing Beauty" (44), "Thrill of a Romance" (45), "Easy to Wed" (46), "On An Island With You" (48), "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (49), "Neptune's Daughter" (49), "Duchess of Idaho" (50), "Million Dollar Mermaid" (52), "Dangerous When Wet" (53), "Easy to Love" (53) and "Jupiter's Darling" (55). One of her four husbands was actor Fernando Lamas (from 1969 to '82). Esther turned down the role of Belle in "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), which eventually went to Shelley Winters. She lent her name to a line of retro women's swimwear. Williams passed in 2013 at age 91.

In 1921, at the age of 12, Carole was spotted playing baseball in the street by director Allan Dwan, who cast her in the film A Perfect Crime.

She was always noted for her energetic, off-beat roles in the screwball comedies of the 1930s. In the late 1930s, she became the highest paid star in Hollywood. She gained more fame after marrying William Powell in 1931, but they divorced two years later. Her career turned around in 1934 when she starred in Howard Hawks’ screwball comedy Twentieth Century. This is where she excelled in this genre. In 1935, Lombard appeared in Hands Across the Table, forming a partnership with Fred MacMurray. She received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in the 1936 film, My Man Godfrey. She was in a total of 79 films.

In January 1942, shortly after America’s entrance into World War II, Howard Dietz, the publicity director of the MGM film studio, recruited Lombard for a tour to sell war bonds in her home state of Indiana. Gable, who had been asked to serve as the head of the actors’ branch of the wartime Hollywood Victory Committee, stayed in Los Angeles, where he was set to begin filming Somewhere I’ll Find You with Lana Turner. Dietz advised Lombard to avoid airplane travel, because he feared for its reliability and safety, and she did most of the trip by train, stopping at various locations on the way to Indianapolis and raising some $2 million for the war effort.

On the way home, however, Lombard didn’t want to wait for the train, and instead boarded the TWA DC-3 in Las Vegas with her mother, Elizabeth Peters, and a group that included the MGM publicity agent Otto Winkler and 15 young Army pilots. Shortly after takeoff, the plane veered off course. Warning beacons that might have helped guide the pilot had been blacked out because of fears about Japanese bombers, and the plane smashed into a cliff near the top of Potosi Mountain.

Search parties were able to retrieve Lombard’s body, and she was buried next to her mother at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, under a marker that read “Carole Lombard Gable.” Hysterical with grief and adrift in the empty house he had shared with Lombard, Gable drank heavily and struggled to complete his work on Somewhere I’ll Find You. He was comforted by worried friends, including the actress Joan Crawford. That August, Gable decided to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He spent most of the war in the United Kingdom, and flew several combat missions (including one to Germany), earning several decorations for his efforts. He would remarry twice more, but when he died in 1960 Gable was interred at Forest Lawn, next to Lombard.
