Born in Hannibal, Missouri 6/14/1895; died 7/17/1971 of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California. Married and divorced singer Irene Wylie (1923-1932); actress Nancy Dover (1932-?). Broadway debut in 1924, the he made his ccreen debut in Hollywood Revue (1929). Voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's 1940 animated feature, Pinocchio.

Guest star on radio programs including The Harry Richman Show for NBC-BLUE (1934-1935); The Rudy Vallee's NBC show during the 1930's so many times he seemed a regular cast member. Host-star of The Cliff Edwards Show on CBS-TV (1949). Regular performer on Fifty-Fourth Street Revue for CBS-TV (1949). Voice of Jiminy Cricket on The Mickey Mouse Club Of The Air for ABC-TV (1955-1959).
