Spoiler : Conrad Veidt (born Hans Walter Konrad Veidt) was arguably the best film actor of his day. His „attic scene“ in the film version of „A Woman‘s Face“ is Oscar-worthy. He became a British subject after renouncing Hitler’s regime and leaving his native land. Conny donated a fair amount of his US-based earnings to support the war effort. Dying suddenly during the war, he sadly never got the chance to see his home, his beloved Berlin, again.

Spoiler : Connie was different than most Hollywood celebrities of the time. He preferred being called Connie, rather than Mr. Veidt. He never legally changed his name to his stage name and his close friends knew that. He wasn't part of the regular Hollywood scene. When he died he was on the sixth hole of a game at the Riviera Country Club. One of his opponents was his doctor, who pronounced him dead at the scene. The county clerk who did his death certificate misspelled Connie's name as "Hanz Walter Conrad Veidt." Maybe the doctor's writing really was sloppy.
