O'Herlihy earned a degree in architecture from the National University of Ireland in 1945, but soon began pursuing an acting career. Actor at the Abbey Theatre before his British screen debut in Hungry Hill (1946). American screen debut in Macbeth (1948). Last movie was playing Joe Kennedy in the 1998 made-for-television movie, The Rat Pack.
