Born in Columbus Grove, Ohio 11/7/1903; died 2/5/1991 of influenza and a heart attack in Santa Monica, California. Educated at the Wabash College. Began his career as a rural schoolteacher. On stage and in vaudeville during the 1920's. Screen debut in The Woman From Hell (1929). Broadway debut in Tobacco Road (1933).
