Spoiler : Gillespie, Dizzy (John Birks Gillespie) Born in Cheraw, South Carolina 10/21/1917; died 1/6/1993 of pancreatic cancer in Englewood, New Jersey. Married to Lorraine Willis (?-?). Gillespie began his career as a Jazz trumpet player in 1930. In Philadelphia (1935), toured with the Teddy Hill Band (1937-1939), then in bands of Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Cab Calloway and Billy Eckstine. Teamed with Charlie "Bird" Parker and Thelonious "Monk" to create a new music that Gillespie named "Be-Bop." Later the music was called Bop (1945-1950), now is refered to as "Modern Jazz." Bop brought in a new way to dress and a new dialect. Dizzy, the "cool man, with a hot horn," (the bell was turned up 45 degres), wore horm-rimmed specs, a goatee, and beret. Leader of a combo (1950-1956) and represented the U.S. Department of State on a culture tour of Latin America and the Middle East (1956-1958). Toured Argentina in 1961 and appeared at jazz festivals beginning in 1962. With the Giants Of Jazz toured America, Japan and Europe (1971-1972). On screen in The Musical Life Of Charlie Parker (1974). Awards include the winner of the Downbeat Polls (1971-1975) and a a 1975 Grammy Award. Composed many tunes including Swing Low Sweet Cadillac. Appeared on many television programs including The Golden Age of Jazz for CBS (1958).
