Spoiler : Donald O'Connor said that he was a hoofer, a dancer mainly from the waist down, until he worked with Gene Kelly. Kelly had taught Ballet, and showed O'Connor how to use the whole body more consistently.

Spoiler : O'Connor, Donald (birth name was Donald David Dixon Ronald O'Connor) Born in Chicago, Illinois 8/28/1925; died 9/27/2003 of heart failure at the Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital in Calabasas, California. In 1999, O'Connor had suffered a severe bout of viral pneumonia with heart and lung complications, but had returned to limited performing after nine months of recuperation. Married and divorced to Gwen Carter (1944-1954); starlet Gloria Noble (1956-2003 his death). O'Connor worked in vaudeville with his parents before making his screen debut in It Can't Last Forever (1937). While his greatest movie performance was his role in 1952's Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds, many folks remember him for playing a straight man (Peter Stirling) to Francis, a talking mule in the series of six from 1950 to 1955. Last movie was playing Jonathan in 1997's Out to Sea.

Spoiler : I just loved Donald O'Connor..one of my favourites of all time. He could do it all with a naivety which made him endearing. I was sad to read he suffered physical abuse from his first wife due to her jealousy of his success and her failure, which left him needing help....she obviously took advantage of this special man and brilliant entertainer

Spoiler : I didn't know or read anything about any physical abuse .but from what I read about Gwenn Carter and get marriage to Donald O'Connor..that's when I realized and wished that he and Peggy Ryan would've fallen in love with each other during the making of"When Johnny Comes Marching Home"(@942)&"Mister Big"(1943)-and wish they would've married each other-onsteaf of him marrying that total"life loser"Gwenn Carter! Bow could he NOT fall for Peggy Ryan back then?!!
