Spoiler : Born in St Louis, Missouri 9/24/1911; died 11/28/2003 of natural causes at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Married to Julie Riley and Virginia Smith, both preceded him in death. Hartman, the son of a judge, was studying law at the St Louis' Washington University when he became distracted by a 1931 playwriting contest. He won, with a musical called "Princess Nita," he also wrote the book, music and lyrics. Fox Studios hired him in 1934 to write screenplays, assigning him to a project for then little-known Spencer Tracy. That job only lasted six months, but Hartman remained in Hollywood for 56 years, moving to RKO, Universal in 1937, Paramount in 1947. Writer for movies including Don't Get Personal (1936); The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968). Hartman was president of the Writers Guild of America (1955-1959), later was a national chairman, in 1985 he received the guild's Morgan Cox award for guild service. Hartman retired, and moved to Santa Fe in 1988. He was awarded the Golden Chili Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999 by the Santa Fe Film Critics Circle.
