An orphan that entered a Harlem, New York amateur dance contest, got wobbly knees and won the contest by singing, trying to impersonate Connie Boswell. Joined Chick Webb's band in 1938. Became a star with her composition of, "A-tisket, A-tasket." Known as the "First Lady Of Song," with her sweet versatile voice and scat improvisations. Fitzgerald had the ability to sing ballads, swing, Dixieland, calypso, jazz, pop, etc. Screen debut in Ride 'Em Cowboy (1941). Regular guest on Flow Gently, Sweet Rhythm on CBS-Radio (1940-1941). Host and featured vocalist on The Ella Fitzgerald Show for NBC-Radio (1940-1943). Guest star on television programs including Eddie Condon's Floor Show for NBC (1949-1950); Kreisler Bandstand for ABC (1951); The Nat "King" Cole Show for NBC (1956-1957); Ford Star Jubilee for CBS (1955-1956); The Frank Sinatra Show for NBC (1967).
