Born in Auroa, Indiana 1/13/1890; died 5/18/1958 from complications of a stroke in Washington, D.C. Rhodes scholar at Oxford. Reporter-editorial writer for the New York Times (1914-1924). Radio news analyst beginning in 1939. As a newscaster he presented the news with a flat, midwestern monotone voice. Joined CBS as a substitute for H.V. Kaltenborn in 1939; Elmer Davis and the News (1939-1942) for CBS; five minutes of CBS news on The Kate Smith Show (1940-1941); during World War II was head of the U.S. Office of War Information (1942-1945); following the end of WWII, he worked at ABC (1945-1953).
