Fay Wray had a very unique, but little talked about talent... As soon as the director yelled action, she had the ability to get her nipples as hard as diamond cutters. It was a talent very suited to her Pre-Code films.

Remembering actress FAY WRAY (1907 – 2004), who was born on September 15th. She is most noted for playing the female lead in King Kong. After appearing in minor movie roles, Wray gained media attention being selected as one of the "WAMPAS Baby Stars". This led to Wray being contracted to Paramount Pictures as a teenager, where she made more than a dozen movies. After leaving Paramount, Wray signed to various film companies. It was under these deals that Wray was cast in various horror films, including Doctor X (1932), The Vampire Bat (1933) and Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933). However, her greatest known films were produced under her deal with RKO Radio Pictures, Inc.. Her first film under RKO was The Most Dangerous Game (1932), co-starring Joel McCrea and shot at night on the same jungle sets that were being used for King Kong during the day, with the leads from both films, Wray and Robert Armstrong, appearing in both movies. The Most Dangerous Game was followed by Wray's most memorable film, King Kong. She also starred in The Bowery (1933) and Viva Villa (1934), both huge productions starring Wallace Beery. Wray later appeared in many major movie roles and on television, finishing her acting career in 1980

Wray was actually a brunette - although famous as a blonde (wearing a wig) in the classic "King Kong" (1933). She was the original 'scream queen' and appeared in other horror / thriller films, such as "Doctor X" (32), "The Most Dangerous Game" (32), "The Vampire Bat" (33) and "Mystery Of The Wax Museum" (33). Other films included: "Ann Carver's Profession" (33), "Shanghai Madness" (33), "The Countess Of Monte Cristo" (34), "The Clairvoyant" (34), "It Happened In Hollywood" (37), "Wildcat Bus" (40) and "Queen Bee" (55). Fay passed in 2004 at age 96.

Fay Wray, born today (15th September) 111 years ago, forever remembered as the love interest in the 1933 pre-Code monster adventure film "King Kong". Originally she must have been rather disappointed with the role, according to her autobiography, "On the Other Hand", Wray recounts that Merian C. Cooper (who shared the direction with Ernest B. Schoedsack) had told her he planned to star her opposite the "tallest, darkest leading man in Hollywood". She assumed he meant Clark Gable until he showed her a picture of Kong climbing the Empire State Building!

Surviving the talkie explosion, she continued working steadily into the early 1930s. Beginning in 1932, Wray developed into the talkie era's first "scream queen," playing the imperiled heroine in five back-to-back horror/fantasy classics. In Doctor X (1932), Vampire Bat (1933) and Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), she was cast opposite the satanic-featured Lionel Atwill, playing his daughter in the first-named film and his intended victim in the remaining two. In The Most Dangerous Game, Wray and Joel McCrea were hunted down like animals by demented sportsman Leslie Banks.

And then came Fay's opportunity to play opposite "the tallest, darkest leading man in Hollywood"--King Kong (1933). It was in this film that the auburn-haired Wray donned a blonde wig to portray Ann Darrow, the wide-eyed, writhing, screaming object of the Mighty Kong's affections. While King Kong is the film for which Wray will always be remembered (as late as 1996, she was still making annual pilgrimages to the Empire State Building to commemorate the anniversary of the film's premiere), it must be noted that she was certainly capable of playing roles with more depth and dimension than Ann Darrow.

She was excellent as Gary Cooper's bitchy ex-flame in One Sunday Afternoon (1933) and as a dim-witted, voracious artist's model in The Affairs of Cellini (1934). Still, she felt typecast after King Kong, and in 1935 headed for England, hoping to find better film opportunities; instead, it was back to damsels in distress! Miss Wray was originally offered the role of the elderly Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic (1997), which she turned down. On August 10, 2004, two days after her death, the lights on the Empire State Building in New York City (scene of the climax from her most popular film, King Kong), were dimmed for 15 minutes in her memory.
