MacMurray, Fred (birth name was Frederick Martin MacMurray) Born in Kankakee, Illinois 8/30/1908; died 11/5/1991 of cancer and pneumonia in Santa Monica, California. Married Lillian Lamont (1936-1953 her death); actress June Haver (1954-1991 his death). Raised in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Attended the Waukesha, Wisconsin Carroll College and Chicago Art Institute. MacMurray began his career as a saxophonist in orchestras to pay his college tuition (1925-1929). Broadway debut in "Three's A Crowd" (1930). Signed a Paramount Pictures contract in 1934. Screen debut in The Gilded Lily (1935).

MacMurray was a reliable rom-com leading man in his early years, appearing opposite the likes of Lombard, Colbert, Dietrich and others (including Barbara Stanwyck in "Remember The Night," four years before "Double Indemnity"). Fred may not have been a William Powell, James Stewart or Cary Grant, but he was very good at what he did.

His career took on a whole new dimension thanks to George Raft turning down the Walter Neff role in DOUBLE INDEMNITY. Fred reciprocated the favor, but with far less satisfactory results, when he refused NOB HILL, which George inherited. Fred was still seen by audiences as primarily a nice guy, but turned in some further dramatic performances in, of course, THE CAINE MUTINY and as the murderous cop in PUSHOVER.
