Born in Richmond, Virginia 5/5/1899; died 12/10/1982 of heart failure in Los Angeles, California. Gosden began working with his long-time comedy partner, Charles Correll on radio in New Orleans (1920); team moved to Chicago in 1923. Team joined station WEBH-Chicago in 1925. 1926 the comedy team of Correll and Gosden moved to radio station WGN-Chicago, appearing on the air as Sam and Henry until 1928. Joined WMAQ-Chicago in 1929; with Correll created and wrote Amos n' Andy on WMAQ (1929); NBC-Radio (1929-1948); CBS-Radio (1948-1960).
Gosden played the parts of Amos, Kingfish and Lightnin' on the radio program (1929-1960). Screen debut in the Amos n' Andy movie, Check and Double Check (1930).
