Spoiler : Born in Rochester, New York 11/24/1912; died 3/13/1999 of heart failure in New York City. Married to actress Ruth Gordon (1942-1985 her death); Marian Seldes (1990-1999 his death). Attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts from 1932 to 1933. Briefly an actor on Broadway, then became an assistant to Broadway director, George Abbot. Worked for Samiel Goldwyn (1937- 1938), then became a director at RKO Pictures. During WWII, he made documentary films for the War Information and Emergency Manpower offices, winning a 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary for producing The True Glory starring Carol Reed. Kanin and wife Gordon collaborated on four screenplays including 1949's Adam's Rib and 1952's Pat and Mike.
