Gary Cooper was the real King of Hollywood in the 30's and 40's. Every top director wanted him to star in their films. He was box office gold for a long time and had a string of box office failures in the late 40's early fifties. His stardom was thought to be on the wane then came "High Noon" and he was back on top again until his death. Virtually his whole career he was starring in A pictures. John Wayne's career on the other hand had the Duke toiling away in B and C pictures for decades before he became the superstar he is remembered for in the late 40's early 50's.

During his career Cooper received five Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, winning twice for Sergeant York (1941) and High Noon (1952). Cooper also received an Academy Honorary Award for his career achievements in 1961. The American Film Institute (AFI) ranked Cooper eleventh on its list of the 25 male stars of classic Hollywood. Three of his characters Will Kane, Lou Gehrig, and Sergeant York made AFI's list of the one hundred greatest heroes and villains, all of them as heroes.

Cooper's career began as an extra and stunt rider in silents mostly westerns, then to acting roles. He appeared in over two dozen films before his first 'talkie', The Virginian (1929). Cooper's unique acting style of appearing natural and authentic on the screen enabled him to portray characters in almost every film genre. Some of Cooper's film credits include; The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926), Wings (1927), The Legion of the Condemned (1928), Morocco (1930), I Take this Woman (1931), A Farewell to Arms (1932), Design for Living (1933), Now and Forever (1934),The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Beau Geste (1939),The Pride of the Yankees (1942), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), The Fountainhead (1949), Friendly Persuasion (1956), Love in the Afternoon (1957) and Man of the West (1958). Cooper's final film was The Naked Edge in 1961.

In his personal life, Cooper was married to Veronica Balfe (aka actress Sandra Shaw) from 1933 until his death in 1961. Their daughter Maria Veronica Balfe Cooper born in 1937 is a producer/actress and has been married to Byron Janis since 1966. Cooper died at the age of 60 from prostate cancer six days after his 60th birthday in Beverly Hills, California and is buried at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary R.C. Cemetery, Southampton, New York.
