Murphy, George (birth name was George Lloyd Murphy)
Born in New Haven, Connecticut 7/4/1902; died 5/3/1992 of leukemia in Palm Beach, Florida. Married to his vaudeville dance partner Juliet Johnson (1926-1973 her death); Palm Beach socialite Betty Blandi (1982-1992 his death). Murphy began his career as a tool maker at the Ford Motor Auto Company, was a miner, real estate agent and night club dancer. On stage before his screen debut in Kid Millions (1934).

Murphy was president of Screen Actor's Guild for many years, recieved special 1950 Academy Award for "interpreting the motion picture industry correctly to the country at large." He became politically active in the Republican Party beginning in 1952, was coordinator of 1956 Republican Convention, ran for a Senate seat in 1964, and became the first actor elected into the Senate. In 1967 he had throat surgery which destroyed his voice, only allowing him to speak in a whisper, and was defeated in his 1970 Senate run. He penned his autobiography in 1970 titled, "Say - Didn't You Used To Be George Murphy?"
