Guy Lombardo 06.19.1902 - 11.05.1977 (75 years old)
Guy Lombardo is best known for his New Years Eve extravaganzas from the Roosevelt Hotel and later the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Lombardo started his band The Royal Canadians in 1924 with his brothers and a handful of local musicians from is hometown in London, Ontario Canada.
Guy Lombardo soon became known as Mr. New Year’s Eve as Americans rang in 47 new years with The Royal Canadians broadcasts from 1929 until 1976. These broadcasts first on radio and then on television were a mainstay of American’s new year’s psyche as the group popularized the traditional Scottish new year’s tune Auld Lang Syne. The Royal Canadians and Guy Lombardo’s version of this song is still played at NYC Times Square at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve to this day.
