While serving in the Coast Guard, stationed at San Diego, Madison was discovered by Selznick talent agent Henry Willson as he was waiting in a line at a radio show. Madison was granted a two-week leave from the Coast Guard for his screen debut in Since You Went Away (1944), then was discharged six months early to appear in Til The End Of Time (1946).
