Baukhage, Hilmar R. (birth name was Hilmar Robert Baukhage) Born in La Salle, Illinois 1/7/1889; died 2/1/1976 atnursing home in Washington, D.C. where he had been confined following a series of strokes. After graduation from the University of Chicago, Baukhage traveled abroad to study at Bonn, Kiel, Jena, Freiburg and the Sorbonne. He began a journalist career at Associated Press in Europe and America, then joined the staff of Leslie's Illustrated Weekly, the predecessor to Life magazine.

He began his broadcasting career as a commentator on The National Farm And Home Hour for NBC- BLUE beginning in 1932. Then was a NBC-BLUE and ABC-Radio commentator (1942-1950), Mutual-Radio (1950-1953). Commentator on ABC and NBC news programs including Four Star News (1939-1942) and News And Comment (1942-1950). He always opened his newscasts with "Baukhage Talking."

Commentator on ABC-TV's first regular newscast, "News and Views" beginning in August of 1948. The newscast was presented six-nights-a-week with Jim Gibbons as co-anchor until 1951. In 1953 when Mutual-Radio dropped his newscasts, he retired, but continued to write articles for newspapers and magazines.
