Harold Russell was a Canadian-American actor, best known for his role as Homer Parrish in the 1946 film "The Best Years of Our Lives". He was born on January 14, 1914, in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, and died on January 29, 2002, in Hartford, Connecticut, United States.
Russell was a veteran of World War II and lost both of his hands in an accident while serving in the US Army. Despite this, he went on to act in several films, including "The Best Years of Our Lives", for which he won two Academy Awards in 1947, one for Best Supporting Actor and the other, an honorary award, "for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance".
Aside from acting, Russell was also an activist and advocate for disabled veterans. He was the co-founder of the World War II Veterans Committee and served as the national chairman of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Throughout his life, he worked to improve the lives of disabled veterans and to raise awareness about their challenges.
