she was a very very beautiful and very very blessed and very very caring and very very loving and very very wonderful person inside and out .unfortuly so so sorry if I never got to meet her but ( My Late Grandparents did ( Jack & Flo Haley ) he was the tinman from the movie The Wizard Of Oz and was a very very beautiful and lovely ( Actress ) ( Rest In Peace Ma Hattie ) and thank you for sharing this with all of us and sending lots and lots of prayers to her family

Yes i remember this lady in Gone with the Wind but she was treated so bad by Hollywood simply because she was black. When she attended the oscar ceremony she had to sit at the back as she wasnt allowed to sit with the white folks. They must have thought the black skin might rub off on their white skin. They really thought this because a white man once said to me that i was lucky i was the same colour as dirt so i didnt have to worry about washing. Can you imagine somebody saying that to you.

Born in Wichita, Kansas 6/10/1895; died 10/26/1952 of breast cancer in the San Fernando Valley, California. Sister of actors Sam, Otis and Etta McDaniel. Singer at age 16 with her brother's traveling tent show. On Broadway in Show Boat before appearing on screen in The Golden West (1932). In 1939 McDaniel won the first Academy Award presented to an African-American for Gone With The Wind.

In 1924 McDaniel became the first African-American woman to sing on radio. In 1931, she was on The Optimistic Do-Nut Hour broadcast on KNX-Los Angeles. Mammy on Show Boat for NBC-Radio (1937). Regular performer on The Eddie Cantor Show for NBC-Radio (1942). Beulah on The Beulah Show for CBS-Radio (1947-1952).

Hattie McDaniels also gave an outstanding performance as Queenie in the 1936 filming of Showboat. "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" in which the actress was partnered with Helen Morgan, Paul Robeson and Irene Dunne is one of the best musical numbers in film history.

A truly wonderful actress and a Hollywood original. She was the first of her race to receive an Oscar though she suffered from much criticism and controversy for her acceptance of roles featuring blacks in subservient roles. Her popularity should have increased after GWTW, but political factors were in place that dictated otherwise and after a difficult life she died far too soon in 1952 .The book Hattie McDaniel: Black Ambition, White Hollywood by Jill Watts tells the story of her life, struggles and triumphs in stage, movies, radio, etc. including her difficult childhood and the struggles of her own father as a slave before the CivilWar, a badly injured soldier and survivor of the conflict .

loved the scene in gone with the wind where Rhett had given her a petticoat … she loved them and when he made reference to them she was embarrassed. having said that ...I believe Ms McDaniel deserved the supporting role Oscar but along side her should have been Butterfly McQueen … "I dont know nothin about no birthin"... great line .. great actress. People of color then were relegated to having to play butlers, maids etc....never a starring role. Lena Horne fought that while she was in Hollywood. of course the studios tried to pass her off as white (same for Dorothy Dandridge) and that was an insult to both these talented ladies. the world was just not ready for them in their time. but dont forget Juanita Moore ,,,, in 1961 she was nominated for academy award and golden globes … she was not a winner. but she is a winner in my book
