She was THE most beautiful actress who ever graced the silver screen and she was an intelligent inventor - who has much to do with why we have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology today. [She and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes, which used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the U.S. Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.] This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. Lamarr began her film career in Europe (in her native Austria) in 1930 and first gained major attention with the controversial film "Ecstasy" (1933) - in which she is seen running and swimming nude. She came to America in 1937 and her first US film was "Algiers" (38) opposite Charles Boyer. She was an instant hit. Another major hit was Cecil B. Later in life the Defense Dept did acknowledge her contribution to science and to defeating the enemies during WWII but by then, it was too late to help her...financially or her reputation. She achieved both stardom and notoriety in the Czech film Extase (1932; Ecstasy), in which she briefly but tastefully appeared in the nude. Her burgeoning career was halted by her 1933 marriage to Austrian munitions manufacturer Fritz Mandl, who not only prohibited her from further stage and screen appearances but also tried unsuccessfully to destroy all existing prints of Extase.
