Spoiler : In the summer of 1943(?) my mother and aunt took my 10 yr.old brother and 8 yr. old me to NBC studios @ Rockefeller Center to listen to a radio show called “Mirth and Madness”. My memory of it is vague but Jack Kirkwood gave my brother a page of the script and autographed it. I’ve never forgotten one line from the show where someone uses the word “derby” and pronounces it “darby” at which point Kirkwood says, “darby” ,oh yahrs the darby.” Very few people know about the show. Years ago, Jackson Beck, the voice over actor who appeared in major roles on most every radio show in the 1940’s (“it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s superman.”), told me, though he knew Jack Kirkwood, he had never heard of M&M and that most likely it had been a brief summer replacement. Spoiler : Looks like one of my favorite Jack Kirkwood shows is missing from this list- Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy 15th anniversary show, featuring Rosemary Clooney, 52 -10-05, where jack plays the mayor of Bergen's home town. "Burned down a lot of houses, but sure made a lot of dough!"

Spoiler : Born in Scotland 8/6/1894; died 8/2/1964 of a heart attack in Woodland Hills, California. He spent his youth in Belfast, Ireland, then moved to Canada. He came to America in 1920s working in vaudeville and burlesque. On screen in Chicken Every Sunday (1949); One Wild Night (1951).
