Guest star on radio programs including at least five times on Lux Radio Theater (5/31/37, 1017/38, 5/29/39, 11/27/39 and 12/22/1941) and The Ford Theater for NBC (1947-1948).

Other films: "Only Angels Have Wings" (39), "The Talk Of The Town" (42), "The More The Merrier" (43) and "A Foreign Affair" (48).

I love Jean Arthur! Now, I hate to say this because I don't like to think of my mind typically diving for the gutter, but the very first thing I noticed was the awkward positioning of that far right egg relative to her pants. It seems an unfortunate juxtaposition, and I would think that the photographer would have caught that.

Arthur (1900 – 1991) was an American actress and a film star of the 1930s and 1940s. Arthur started in silent films but her smooth transition to sound was aided by her nasal voice, sometimes sexy, other times squeaky. She won immense popularity in John Ford's "The Whole Town's Talking" (1935).

A deft comedienne and prickly, sometimes tomboyish heroine, she hit her peak post-1935 playing a string of down-to-earth, independent types, often working women, and costarring in three celebrated Frank Capra films: "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936), "You Can't Take It with You" (1938) and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) with Jimmy Stewart. Even though Jean and Stewart never bonded off-screen, Jimmy called Jean "the finest actress I ever worked with. No one had her humor, her timing". Director George Stevens famously called her "one of the greatest comediennes the screen has ever seen" while Frank Capra credited her as "my favorite actress".

Arthur quit movies at the height of her career in 1944, following an Oscar nomination and while still Columbia Pictures' top female box-office attraction. She appeared in only two more films, for Oscar-winning directors Billy Wilder (A Foreign Affair (1948)) and George Stevens (Shane (1953)). According to John Oller's biography "Jean Arthur: The Actress Nobody Knew" (1997), Arthur was a shy person who came to loathe making movies, having developed a kind of stage fright that made acting in movies agony for her.

After she quit movies, she tried to make a go at a stage career, being part of the original cast of "Born Yesterday," but she dropped out during previews and was replaced by Judy Holliday. She later gave television a crack in the mid-'60s, but the The Jean Arthur Show (1966) was canceled after half a season.

Arthur taught drama at Vassar from 1968 till 1973. She was teaching there at the same time that Meryl Streep was studying there in her junior year. Upon seeing the young drama major rehearsing August Strindberg's play "Miss Julie", Arthur remarked it was "just like watching a movie star".

Her other films of the thirties included: "The Virtuous Husband" (31), "The Most Precious Thing In Life" (34), "The Whole Town's Talking" (35) with Edward G. Robinson, "The Ex-Mrs. Bradford" (36) opposite William Powell, "The Plainsman" (36) co-starring Gary Cooper, "Easy Living" (37) and "Only Angels Have Wings" (39) opposite Cary Grant. She continued her career into the 1940s in films like: "The Devil And Miss Jones" (41), "The Talk of The Town" (42) with Cary Grant and Ronald Colman, "The More The Merrier" (43 - Oscar nomination) and "A Foreign Affair" (48) opposite Marlene Dietrich. Arthur's next film was her last - the classic "Shane" in 1953 co-starring Alan Ladd and Van Heflin. Jean passed in 1991 at age 90.
