Found out a fascinating piece of local history today concerning Jean Harlow; she visited Blackpool (my neighboring town, where Tim Burton filmed earlier this year) and while on the Big Dipper (a ride at the Pleasure Beach, the local theme park) she lost a diamond ring! Can you imagine finding A) a diamond ring (in Blackpool of all places), and B) a ring that was owned by the biggest film star of the day grin emoticon I also recently found out that Bette Davis visited Blackpool in 1936 to get away from it all, but got hounded by the local newspaper The Gazette (to whom she was very gracious); Vivien Leigh (my hero!) performed there at the Winter Gardens Opera House during the War (she and Laurence Olivier were great patriots and did a number of shows for the troops home and abroad). The Divine Miss M has also visited. It's amazing to think of the huge stars that have been there, considering how poverty stricken it is now.

Great classic actress in this foto n films, she was so beautiful, attractive, sexy, stunning woman! loved her n The Hells Angels, She passed away from Kidney disease n there was no dialysis back in the day! One of the all-time greats. Rin Tin Tin and owner lived across the street from Jean Harlow at one time. The dog became old and at the time of the dog's death, he was being held in Harlow's lap.

JEAN HARLOW (1911 ~ 1937) Harlow was a popular leading lady at MGM during the 1930s and considered an early sex symbol. She was signed by Howard Hughes (pre MGM) and appeared in "Hell's Angels" (1930). She became a major star at MGM when she signed with them in '32. Among her most popular films: "The Public Enemy" (31), "Platinum Blonde" (31), "Red Dust" (32), "Dinner At Eight" (33), "Bombshell" (33), "China Seas" (35), "Wife vs. Secretary" (36) and "Libeled Lady" (36). She sadly passed at only 26 in 1937 from various illnesses, including septicemia and influenza. A stand-in had to finish her scenes in "Saratoga", her last film.

Additionally, Jean was still very young (not even 21), had only been in 7 silent shorts & 4 feature (sound) films at that point in time. And, it appears she really had no acting training prior to her film career. She could do dramatic roles, though many feel that comedy was hèr forte...

Just look at her performance in Dinner At Eight. She gives a wonderful performance in this, just two years after Public Enemy. Of course, Cukor was known as a "woman's director" which suggests to me part of her acting in PE may/should be attributed to Wellman..

She really was awful in this. What's really impressive, though, is that Cagney, in his scenes with her, is just as committed, just as vibrantly real. That must have been tough, working with a really wooden performer. And I agree, it wasn't long before she became really good, particularly with comedy (Bombshell is one of my favorite films of the period).

Just a few years later kidney dialysis came along and she would have likely survived if had she made it until then. She made at least 30 movies in her brief career, most in the pre-code era. Her most well known work includes pre-codes “Dinner at Eight,” “The Public Enemy,” “Scarface,” “Hell’s Angels” and “Platinum Blonde”, among others. She was the #1 actress of the thirties, and one of the biggest stars of the pre-code era.

Incredibly pretty, and oh so talented. She could flip a line with the best, and did so. William Powell, Spencer Tracy, Myrna Loy, she was right there with them. "Bombshell" to me is an underrated movie. It's very revealing about what Hollywood had already become, a dream factory with warts. All the leeches, the parasites, all hanging on and dragging her down.

Taken in 1932 Jean Harlow sits in her Packard 903 Deluxe Eight Sport Phaeton. Aged just 21 she had signed for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and would become one of their most successful leading ladies, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), Reckless (1935), and Suzy (1936). Harlow's popularity rivaled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world by the mid 1930s, often nicknamed the "Blonde Bombshell" and the "Platinum Blonde", but her meteoric career was destined to be cruelly cut short. Harlow died aged just 26 during the 1937 filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using body doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. The American Film Institute ranked her as the 22nd greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema One of the MGM writers later said, "The day Baby died there wasn't one sound in the commissary for three hours."Spencer Tracy wrote in his diary, "Jean Harlow died today. Grand gal." MGM closed on the day of her funeral, June 9.
