Born in Los Angeles, California 2/10/1929; died 7/21/2004 while asleep after a long battle with cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Married and divorced to Sharon Hennagin (?-?); Carol Heather Goldsmith (?-2004 his death).

Goldmsith studied piano under Jacob Gimpel, composition, theory and counterpoint under Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and film composition under Miklos Rozsa' at the University of Southern California.

By 1950, he was a clerk typist in the music department of CBS Radio. Goldsmith provided music for Romance on CBS-Radio (1954-1957). With the Wilbur Hatch Orchestra, Goldsmith provided the trumpet theme introducing the Frontier Gentleman on CBS-Radio (1958).
