Spoiler : Hairston, Jester (Jester Joseph Hairston) Born the son of a slave in Belews Creek, North Carolina 7/9/1901; died 1/18/2000 in Los Angeles, California. Grew up in Pittsburgh. Scholarship from his Baptist church allowed him to study landscape design at the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now the University of Massachusetts), dropped out, then graduated from Tufts University in 1929. Moved to New York and became an assistant to Hall Johnson, a popular conductor of Negro spirituals whose choir was the most prominent black singing group of the 1930's. He moved to Hollywood in 1935 with the choir, then became a choral arranger for Russian-born conductor and composer Dimitri Tiomkin for the 1936 movie Lost Horizon that won an Academy Award for the score. Hairston was associated with Tiomkin for 20 years. Hairston organized Hollywood's first intergrated choir and composed or arranged more that 300 spirituals. Actor on screen in the Tarzan movies series during the 1930's until 1955. Composed the song, "Amen" for the 1963 movie, "Lillies Of The Field," dubbed singing voice of Sidney Poitier for the movie. Last movie was playing Pop in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988). King Moses on the syndicated radio program, Bold Venture (1951-1952).
