Spoiler : The delightful Jimmy Durante was born 122 years ago today. If ever we find ourselves fretting over our age and perhaps wishing we were younger, we remind ourselves that, were we born later, we might not have shared time on God’s green earth with some of our favorite performers of years gone by, and the Schnozzola certainly deserves a spot on that roster. We weren’t around for his heyday, but he was still a busy performer when we were younger and we got to enjoy him as a frequent talk show and variety show guest. Durante doesn’t immediately spring to mind when we’re asked to name some of our favorite stars of yore, but when we do think of him, a smile invariably forms on our lips, and that’s as strong an endorsement as any performer could hope for: to make people smile at the mere memory of you some 35 years after your passing.

Spoiler : Durante, Jimmy (birth name was James Francis Durante) Born in New York City 2/10/1893; died 1/28/1980 of pneumonitis in Santa Monica, California. Married to Jeanne Olsen (?-1943 her death); Margie Little following a 15 years courtship (1960- 1980 his death). The "Schnozzola's" first job was in his father's barbershop. Coney Island piano player at age seventeen. Formed a five-piece band in 1916. 1920 he made his Broadway debut at Loew's State Theatre. Formed a comedy team (Clayton, Jackson and Durante) that played night clubs; the same partners opened the New York Club Durant in 1923. Clayton was credited with coining Durante's nickname, "Schnozzola." Durante's program sign-offs with "Good-night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are" was said to be in memory of his late wife Jeanne Olsen, but following Durante's death, his widow (Margie Little) stated that it refered to all the lonely people of the world.
