Joan Bennett is such a cool cucumber in her film noir femme fatale roles. She is amazing as Barnabas Colins' mother in Dark Shadows answer she kills it in her final film role in Suspiria. Love her husky voice and steady delivery of the lines.

Joan (younger sister to Constance Bennett) had relative success during most of the 1930s as a blonde and then switched to becoming a brunette (after Hedy Lamarr arrived on the scene) and had much more success during the 1940s. Her most notable films were: "Little Women" (33), "Trade Winds" (38), "The Woman In The Window" (44), "Scarlet Street" (45), "The Macomber Affair" (47), "Father Of The Bride" (50) and "Father's Little Dividend" (51). She appeared in the successful TV series Dark Shadows later on (1966 - 71) and co-starred in "House Of Dark Shadows" (70).

I am currently reading a biography of Joan & her sister, Constance because of rewatching the entire DARK SHADOWS series on dvd. Thanks to TCM watching some of Joan's old movies from the 1940s proved to be a real eyeopener on how talented and very beautiful she really was. FYI: If you're a movie buff like I am and enjoy watching the 1938/39 screen tests for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in GWTW, did you know that Joan was one of the top 4 candidates? It's true.

Sister of Constance Bennett and Barbara Bennett. Married and divorced to John Marion Fox (1926-1928); Gene Markey (1932-1938); producer Walter Wanger (1940-1965); David Wilde (1978-1990 her death). On screen in Bulldog Drummond (1929). Last movie was Divorce Wars, a made-for-television movie in 1982.

Remembering Joan Bennett on her birthday February 27, 1910 - December 7, 1990. I can think of no other actress that successfully had such an abrupt and total change in screen persona as she did from the 30's as a pleasant blonde ingenue into the 40's as the ultimate dark haired fem fatale. Dick Powell is the only other star I can think of that can equal that level of image change.

Love Joan Bennett. She started so young but most of her pre code movies remain fairly obscure because they were for Fox. In the 30s she is wonderful (I love Big Brown Eyes) but it's so weird to think she was also in Dark Shadows and Suspiria. Now that's some versatility!

Love love LOVE her in "Father of The Bride"...she makes me laugh, she makes me cry ! when she watches Tracy try on his old tuxedo...I nearly choke with laughter.....when she says..."you'll put somebody's eye out !" and then they dance together as old married people in the detritus of the wedding at the end...a great movie and she is fabulous in it. Comic timing and pathos.

Bennett (1910 – 1990) was an American stage, film and television actress. Bennett appeared in more than 70 films from the era of silent movies, well into the sound era. Personable, extremely pretty and prolific star of a wide range of films in the 1930s and 40s. Bennett began her film career as a demure blonde ingenue (e.g. in George Cukor's "Little Women" 1933, William K. Howard's breathtaking "The Trial of Vivienne Ware" 1932). Raoul Walsh's delightful "Me and My Gal" (1932), though, did give her an offbeat chance to indulge in sharp wisecracking.

Bennett was nonetheless intriguing, likable and highly watchable, her sometimes aloof, serene presence highly effective at suggesting muffled passion. In 1938 she followed the trend of going brunette and parting one's hair in the middle (inspired by Hedy Lamarr's strong first Hollywood impression), and the look stuck. "Trade Winds" (1938) was an enjoyable Tay Garnett romp, and "The Housekeeper's Daughter" (1939) gave Bennett a good comedy, but she soon developed into a sultry, brunette fixture who proved outstanding in several 1940s films noirs.

During the search for an actress to play Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, Bennett was given a screen test and impressed producer David O. Selznick to such an extent that she was one of the final four actresses, along with Jean Arthur, Vivien Leigh and Paulette Goddard.
