Spoiler : (birth name was Joseph Paul Di Maggio) Born in Martinez, California 11/25/1914; died 3/8/1999 of lung cancer at his Harbor Island, Florida home. Married and divorced to starlet Dorothy Arnold (1939-1944); actress Marilyn Monroe (1954-1955). Grew up in San Francisco where his father operated a fishing boat.

Spoiler : The "Yankee Clipper," or "Joltin' Joe" as he was called, began his ball career with the San Francisco Seals in the Pacific Coast League. Joined the New York Yankees in 1936. 1941 DiMaggio set an all-time major league hitting streak in 56 consecutive games. During WWII he spent two and a half years in the Army Air Cadet's physical training program. Named the American League's Most Vauable Player three times; in 1949 became baseball's first $100,000 player. DiMaggio played in nine World Series champion teams. Retired from baseball in 1951 with a lifetime average of 325; batted 361 home runs. Following his retirement from baseball, DiMaggio briefly served as a vice president and coach for the Oakland, California A's, and was a member of the board of directors for the Baltimore Orioles. Inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1955; named Baseball's Greatest Living Player by the Baseball Commissioner's office poll on the sport's 100 anniversary in 1969.
