In 1956 and 1961, the Writers Guild of American nominated him for awards for television episodes of Gunsmoke, Rawhide and Brokwn Arrow. In 1960 and 1961, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City gave Dunkel it's Western Heritage Award for writng episodes of Rawhide. In retirement, Dunkel was commodore of the Santa Monica Yacht Club.
