They broke the mold when they made Katharine Hepburn 108 years ago today. Katherine Hepburn was born, well, Katharine Houghton Hepburn (what, you expected a straight shooter like Ms. Hepburn to resort to the artifice of a screen name?) 109 years ago today in Hartford, Connecticut. It’s almost startling to be reminded on such occasions that Ms. Hepburn passed away in 2003, as it’s difficult to imagine any malady or even the passing of time itself prevailing against her strong will. We’re fully prepared to believe that she left us then, at age 96, only because she was ready to go and gave the okay.

Known for her headstrong independence and spirited personality, Hepburn's career as a Hollywood leading lady spanned more than 60 years. Her work came in a range of genres, from screwball comedy to literary drama, and she received four Academy Awards for Best Actress - a record for any performer.

Hepburn holds the record for Best Actress Academy Award wins - a total of four. She was Oscar nominated a total twelve times. Her film career spanned from 1932 until 1994. She made nine films with her most frequent co-star Spencer Tracy and had stated in her autobiography - "It was a unique feeling I had for Spencer. I would have done anything for him." She took a five year break (from '62 to '67) to care for him during ill health and was with him when he passed in '67. They co-starred together in his last film "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" (67). She won her second Oscar for that film and her other three wins were for: "Morning Glory" (33), "The Lion In Winter" (68) - [she tied with Barbra Streisand for "Funny Girl"] and "On Golden Pond" (81). Born Katharine Houghton Hepburn on May 12th, 1907, in Hartford, Connecticut. Her parents were wealthy, progressive and encouraged her to always speak her mind and exercise. She was devastated when at the age of 14, she found her brother Tom dead by an accidental hanging, said to have been the result of practicing a noose technique taught by his father.

Kate started withdrawing into herself and was mostly homeschooled. She attended Bryn Mawr College, and it was there she decided to become an actress. After graduating, she started getting small roles on Broadway and received the attention of Hollywood. A terrific actress, but rather strident in some of her 30’s performances. She should have won the Academy Award for ‘Alice Adams’ though IMHO. And I considered her very beautiful, with great bone structure. I prefer the Hepburn of later decades. But a definite cinema great all the same.
