Riggs, L. A. Speed (birth name was Lee Aubrey Riggs)
Born in North Carolina 2/18/1907; died 2/1/1987 of heart failure in Rocky Mount, North
Carolina. Riggs was selected by American Tobacco Company's President George Washington Hill to provide the tobacco auction chant for the Lucky Strike radio commercials beginning in 1938 on Your Hit Parade, later for programs including The Jack Benny Show for NBC; Your Lucky Strike (The Don Ameche Show) for CBS (1948-1949).

Riggs continued airing his auctioneers chant, ending with "Sold American!" until tobacco advertising was banned from radio and television in 1971. In later years, he founded an organization called Your Community Fund, that was devoted to training young people in job skills to earn a living.
