Spoiler : Lana Turner made her screen debut in They Won't Forget in 1937 and her final appearance was on the television comedy show The Love Boat in 1985, a career that spanned 48 years. Turner could be tough cookie, she was definitely smart, and determined, plus she was tenacious and steadfast possessing a strong-will and it didn't hurt to have an indestructible frame of mind. Lana Turner in the 1940's became the equivalent of Joan Crawford in the 1930's. Even though Turner and Crawford were unalike physically, they both came from hard scrabble childhoods and were willing to work hard and cooperate with the Studio. Turner even played the Crawford role in the remake of Grand Hotel (1932) now titled Weekend At The Waldorf (1945). Metro thought that Lana Turner would now inherit Joan Crawford's roles but MGM soon realized that Turner had too much Tinseltown in her pores to make her believable in the hash house. After a certain point, she looked too rich, too polished, too elegant, too much the girl from Fifth Avenue to bring off a rags-to-riches role. Furthermore, whereas Crawford could suppress her glamour and reach into herself to find a memory of her humble beginnings, Turner appeared to cut loose her past and believe in her own glamour. For her audiences, she was truly a movie star, born and raised on film for everyone's pleasure. She became a star the thing most dreamed of, while she was still a dreamy girl. Soon, Turner developed a strong and significant sense of herself, and her personal tragedies shaped the audience's view of her in a way that was linked only to her. Turner survived by accepting the dream as her reality. Lana Turner is both a typical product of the studio system and one that, against all odds, survived it and finally outlived it. There's a real sense of justice in that. Turner was smarter than everyone thought she was. In later years Turner was proud that she was able to survive the Studio Era. She never considered her MGM days bondage but that they gave her a foundation to build upon. In public when Turner was discussing her career she said, "Never look back, what's past is past, and I can't let it destroy me....I must continue working. The fact is that it's the only thing I knew." Lana Turner did look back. Turner always keep herself going always, looking ahead, watching for that "special role which could be just around the corner." She never whined to the press about how tough things were when she was young. She didn't commit suicide or end up waiting on tables, she wasn't found down-and-out at Bellevue Hospital. Unlike the high priestess Samarra she played in The Prodigal (1955, MGM), she refused to leap into the flames, Lana Turner ended up by having it all. By the 1980's Lana Turner was considered to be a "Legend" she would appear onstage in: interviews, documentaries, and in biographies just to authenticate her absolutely "Movie Star" life story. Thus Lana Turner was allowed to go out on TOP, onstage, in full "Movie Star Regalia," and with the sound of applause roaring, she walked towards her admirers. Shortly before she died of throat cancer on June 29, 1995, she pulled herself together and, ill though she was, flew to Barcelona, Spain to accept a tribute from the Spanish Film Festival. She took the stage dressed in a beautiful sequinned gown and looking every inch a Movie Star Legend and as she walked off stage this was her final walk before her public, and she gave it everything she had, receiving a thunderous standing ovation.

Spoiler : Turner (1921 – 1995) was an American actress who worked in film, television, theater, and radio. She was born in a small mining town, where her father Virgil, an itinerant miner and one of 12 children, eloped with 15-year-old Mildred Frances Cowan. Mildred's parents objected until they learned she was pregnant with what would be her only child, Lana. Turner's father was murdered in December 1930 after participating in an all-night crap game in San Francisco, where the family had moved. The case was never solved.

Spoiler : In 1936, while still in high school, she was discovered while purchasing a soda at the Top Hat Malt Shop in Hollywood. At the age of 16, she was signed to a personal contract by Warner Bros. director Mervyn LeRoy, who took her with him when he transferred to MGM in 1938.

Spoiler : Turner attracted attention playing a murder victim in her first film, LeRoy's They Won't Forget (1937), and she later transitioned into featured roles, often appearing as an ingénue. Her auburn hair was bleached for Idiot's Delight (1939). She was withdrawn from the film, but the fact that she had become a blonde not only changed her screen image but gave her such an outgoing, swinging personality that Hollywood called her the Nightclub Queen.

I think she looked much better and, yes, I also think Hollywood definitely went overboard with their blond ambition. What a natural beauty she was before the peroxide posse of Tinsel Town bleached her hair follicles into oblivion! Her sweet happy face shows all the untarnished hopefulness, energy and honesty of a youthful spirit in love with life .
