Born in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan 1/4/1923; died 7/2/2002 of complications from emphysema and heart failure in Santa Monica, California. Lee graduated from Harvard University in 1944, then was an actor on stage in New York. Writer for the Broadway play, "Career" which was a big hit in 1957, then wrote the screen version of the play in 1959, starring Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine. Writer for other movies including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1960). Writer television programs including episodes of The Defenders on CBS (1961-1965).

Writer of four episodes, co-writer of four other episodes of the television mini-series, Roots that was telecast on ABC from 1/23/1977 until 1/30/1977. Lee and William Blinn shared the 1977 Humanitas Prize for "a humanizing achievement in television." The two also shared a Television Critics Circle Award as writers for Roots.
