LORETTA YOUNG (1913 ~ 2000) Young won the Best Actress Oscar for "The Farmer's Daughter" (1947) and received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for "Come To The Stable" (49). A favorite is the holiday classic "The Bishop's Wife" (47). She also had a successful anthology TV series - The Loretta Young Show (from 1953 to '61), which won three Emmy Awards. Other films included: "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" (1928), "Loose Ankles" (30), "I Like Your Nerve" (31), "Platinum Blonde" (31), "Employee's Entrance" (33), "The Life of Jimmy Dolan" (33), "The Call of the Wild" (35 - in which she became pregnant with Clark Gable's child and kept it secret for many years), "The Unguarded Hour" (36), "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell" (39), "China" (43), "Along Came Jones" (45), "The Stranger" (46), "Rachel and the Stranger" (48), "The Accused" (49), "Cause for Alarm" (51) and "Because of You" (52). Loretta passed in 2000 at age 87.

Some might say Loretta has the look of the Madonna here who, for a time, was famously unwed and pregnant....This film, she made while pregnant (allegedly via rape by her previous co-star), wearing carefully tailored gowns, to protect her unmarried yet devout status, until she could give birth (because she did not believe in abortion)...hide the baby for some 18 mo., then pretend to adopt her own daughter. That was a brave and complicated undertaking--made more so, by the child's purported resemblance to her biological father.

By the mid-30s, Young (born 1913) had blossomed into one of Hollywood's more prominent leading ladies, capably adorning dozens of (mostly mediocre) productions. With her prominent cheekbones, limpid-pool eyes and Joan Crawford-style mouth, Young was often utilized for her stylish beauty and ladylike screen personality rather than the acting talent suggested by "Platinum Blonde" (1931), "Midnight Mary," "Man's Castle" and "Zoo in Budapest" (all 1933, and an excellent showcase triple bill for Young). Young, however, did enjoy the very occasional meaty, charming, or relatively offbeat role, as in "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell" (1939). In 1994 Young's daughter Judy Lewis wrote a book in which she revealed she had been fathered outside of wedlock by Clark Gable and that for years she had been led to believe that she had been adopted by Young.
